Nitinol Actuator Over-Stress Protection

Nitinol actuators are very easily damaged if the stress exceeds roughly 40 ksi or if the temperature exceeds 150 degrees C. This is a demonstration of mechanical over-stress protection in which flexures deflect very short distances when an engineered or pre-determined Nitinol wire stress is exceeded. Under high stress conditions the flexures allow the Nitinol anchor point to move and close a switch. Thereby cutting power to the device and protecting the Nitinol from over temperature or over stress conditions.

These boards are as received from our board manufacturer and are ready for the insertion of pins as guides for the stainless steel stages.  We swage the Nitinol wire in place after insertion of the stages to create our custom Nitinol actuators.  We routinely do pilot runs of 250 to 500 such actuators.

This is a rotary Nanomuscle operating at 9 Volts. It is capable 60 degrees of rotation in both directions. The actuation velocity capability is 240 degrees per second. The SMA diameter is 0.0035″ HT Flexinol wire.

A magnetic detent on one printed coil provides a preferred location for the magnet that is shared between the two coils. When the coil is energized the magnet escapes the detent and travels to the opposite side. When the coil is de-energized the magnet returns to the detent position.
